Casino de Charlevoix casino hotel in La Malbaie, QC

Overview

Casino de Charlevoix is the smallest property on this list and the one with the best address. It shares grounds with Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, a 1929 château-style resort on the cliffs above the St. Lawrence at La Malbaie, two hours down-river from Quebec City.

The casino itself is modest — roughly 800 slot machines and 20 gaming tables in about 25,000 square feet, operated by Loto-Québec and connected to the hotel by a short covered walk. Nobody drives five hours for this floor.

They drive for the Manoir: 405 rooms, a golf course on the cliff edge, a spa, and a view down the estuary that in autumn is among the best in eastern North America. The casino is an evening option inside a much larger holiday, and reviewed on those terms it works very well.

The casino floor

What is actually in the room, category by category. Counts are approximate and shift as machines are rotated — we last checked this property in July 2026.

  • Slots & slot machines

Around 800 slot machines in a compact, comfortable room — modern cabinets, low denominations well represented.

  • Table games

Roughly 20 gaming tables covering blackjack, roulette and a small selection of card games. Limits are modest; the pit closes earlier than at the urban properties.

  • Poker room

    No dedicated poker room.

  • Sportsbook

    Sports wagering terminals available.

  • Live casino

Live dealer tables during peak hours with electronic terminals otherwise.

  • High rollers & VIP

A small high-limit area; this is not a high roller destination.

Hotel & resort

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu is a genuine grand hotel — roughly 405 rooms, a 1929 building maintained rather than modernised into blandness, with a spa, indoor and outdoor pools and one of the most dramatic golf courses in Canada on the cliff edge. River-facing rooms are the ones to book.

On site

  • approx. 405 rooms (Fairmont)
  • Clifftop golf course
  • Spa and indoor/outdoor pools
  • Covered walkway to the casino
  • St. Lawrence estuary views
  • Whale watching and hiking nearby

Dining

Where to eat without leaving the property. Descriptions are our own; nothing here is paid placement.

Charlevoix dining room

Regional Quebec cooking in the Fairmont — the Charlevoix terroir is a serious food region and the kitchen uses it.

Casino restaurant and bar

Casual dining beside the gaming floor.

Bar Le Saint-Laurent

The hotel bar, with the view that justifies the trip.

Entertainment

Programming is quiet — occasional performances at the casino and hotel events. The entertainment here is the region: whale watching at Tadoussac, hiking in Hautes-Gorges, the Charlevoix food route.

Pros and cons

What works

  • The best hotel on this list, by a distance
  • Setting is genuinely world-class
  • Charlevoix region gives you a week of things to do
  • Quiet, comfortable casino floor with no crush

What does not

  • Smallest gaming floor of any property here
  • Very remote — five to six hours from Montreal
  • Fairmont rates in peak autumn are high
  • No poker, limited table variety

Verdict

Choose it for the Manoir and treat the casino as a bonus. As a gaming destination it is thin; as a holiday with a casino floor attached, nothing in Canada comes close.
