Best casino hotels in Quebec

State-run casinos in striking buildings — a former Expo pavilion in Montreal, a lakeside pavilion in Gatineau, a Charlevoix manor.

Quebec landscape

The gambling landscape in Quebec

Quebec is the outlier: casinos are owned and operated directly by Loto-Québec, a provincial crown corporation. There are no private operators and no competing brands, which shows in a uniform standard of service and a distinctly civic feel on the floor.

The buildings are the draw. Casino de Montréal occupies the former French and Quebec pavilions from Expo 67 on Île Notre-Dame. Casino du Lac-Leamy sits beside a lake in Gatineau with the Hilton attached. Casino de Charlevoix shares grounds with Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, a 1929 clifftop resort above the St. Lawrence.

Minimum gambling age is 18. French is the working language of all three properties, though staff switch to English without friction.

Practical tips for Quebec

  • Quebec casino floors are the only ones in Canada operated directly by the province — expect a public-institution tone rather than a resort-brand one.
  • Casino de Montréal has no hotel on Île Notre-Dame. Downtown hotels are a 15-minute drive or a metro ride to Jean-Drapeau plus a shuttle.
  • Charlevoix is a destination in itself. Treat the casino as one evening inside a longer regional trip, not the reason for it.
  • Signage and dealer calls default to French. Ask and you will get English immediately, but the room reads bilingual.
