Casino Rama Resort casino hotel in Rama (Orillia), ON

Overview

Casino Rama sits on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation near Orillia, ninety minutes north of Toronto at the edge of cottage country. It was the first commercial casino in Ontario on First Nation land and remains the province's classic weekend-away property — far enough from the city to feel like a trip, close enough to do in a Friday evening.

The floor is large: roughly 190,000 square feet with around 2,500 slot machines and more than a hundred gaming tables. The attached hotel runs to about 300 rooms, and the Entertainment Centre seats around 5,000, which puts Rama in the same entertainment tier as Windsor.

What distinguishes it is the setting. This is not an urban property with a view of a parking structure — it sits in the woods near Lake Couchiching, and the surrounding region gives you something to do in daylight. Golf, boating and the Trent-Severn Waterway are all within reach.

The casino floor

What is actually in the room, category by category. Counts are approximate and shift as machines are rotated — we last checked this property in July 2026.

  • Slots & slot machines

Approximately 2,500 slot machines across a wide floor, with dedicated high-limit banks and a strong showing of progressive jackpot terminals.

  • Table games

Over a hundred gaming tables — blackjack, roulette, baccarat, craps, sic bo and a rotating carnival selection, all run by professional dealers.

  • Poker room

A poker room operates with cash games and scheduled tournaments; it is smaller than Fallsview's but has a loyal regional following.

  • Sportsbook

Sports wagering is available on the floor with screens and terminals.

  • Live casino

Live dealer tables through the pit, plus electronic table terminals at lower minimums.

  • High rollers & VIP

High-limit gaming rooms with host service and VIP lounge access for qualifying players.

Hotel & resort

The attached hotel runs to roughly 300 rooms and suites in a low-rise resort format, refurbished in recent years. Rooms are comfortable and quiet — the building is set back from the gaming floor, which is not always true at casino hotels. There is a spa, an indoor pool and a fitness centre, and a golf course nearby completes the resort picture.

On site

  • approx. 300 rooms and suites
  • Spa and salon
  • Indoor pool and fitness centre
  • 5,000-seat Entertainment Centre
  • Convention and meeting space
  • Golf and lakes within a short drive

Dining

Where to eat without leaving the property. Descriptions are our own; nothing here is paid placement.

The Cutting Board

The property's upscale grill room — steak, chops and a proper wine list.

Weirs Lane Buffet

Large buffet with regional theme nights, busy on show weekends.

Casual dining and cafés

A spread of quick options across the casino level including a coffee bar and noodle counter.

Entertainment

The Entertainment Centre seats around 5,000 and books major touring acts through the year — the reason a lot of Toronto visitors make the drive in the first place. Smaller lounge performances run on the casino level most weekends.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Genuine resort setting rather than an urban box
  • Strong entertainment programme for the size of the market
  • Free parking — rarer than it should be
  • Quiet, well-separated hotel rooms

What does not

  • You need a car
  • Dining prices are resort-level with limited alternatives nearby
  • Winter drive up Highway 11 can be unpleasant

Verdict

The best two-night casino hotel trip within easy reach of Toronto. Book around a show, take the drive on a Friday afternoon, and use the Saturday for the lakes rather than the floor.
